Granduncle Mark's Genealogy Parlor
In memory of
'Charlie'
Charles Ambrose Hickman, Jr.
(16 March 1877 - 27 March 1967)
Submitted by his grandson,
Mark Ellsworth Hickman, PhD
My grandfather, Charlie Hickman, was a colorful character around the
Bloomington, Monroe County,
Indiana community for the last several decades of his long life.
I used to marvel when I went to town
with him that almost everyone called him by name. And, everyone seemed to
like him. The courthouse square downtown was a social resource for Charlie.
Charlie was 74-years old when I was born, so I only remember him with white hair,
but he had the spirit of a younger man.
Charlie was opinionated -- as devout a Republican as my other grandparents
were devout Democrats. He expected people to trust his honor enough that
businesses around town knew they must not send a monthly statement to Charlie.
He paid his bills, but would not tolerate anyone thinking that he needed a
reminder. That was just Charlie, and everyone knew it.
Charlie loved to have outrageous fun. For some reason, the local traffic cops tolerated him
driving his automobile as close to them as possible, without actually hitting them.
The Police would jokingly shake their fists at him as he drove away laughing.
Charlie loved his children and grandchildren. Spending time with family was at
the top of his list of favorite things to do.
Charlie never accumulated wealth, but always had the basics for his family, and
for whatever relatives happened to be living with the family. He accomplished this
by hard manual labor. He farmed, drove a truck and dug basements. Whatever it
took to take care of his family.
Charlie loved to be married. Each time he lived longer than a wife,
he married again very soon. His wives were Mary, Mary and Stella.
He had 17 children and step-children.
Charlie's strong spirit saw him through many years of activity, but he was ill
during the last few months of his long life, dying at the age of 90 years.
Charles Ambrose Hickman, Jr. died 27 March 1967 in Bloomington, Monroe County,
Indiana. He is buried beside his first wife
at Clear Creek Cemetery in Clear Creek, Monroe County,
Indiana.
A brick with Charlie's name is now on the sidewalk of the
courthouse square that he loved so much in Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana.

NOTE: The 1910 U. S. Census in Orange County, Indiana indicated that

about this other child. Even this child's two surviving siblings (Harold & Rhea, who
were born after the birth and death this child) do not know the identity of this child.
We only know that this child must have died in infancy or childhood.
It is likely that this child did not live long since he or she is not
known to surviving siblings.
